Visions
Inspired by the rich culture of Colombia, various indigenous themes and symbols, originally made from materials as diverse as clay, gold and precious stones, are brought to life in a multi-stage creative process.
Once again, a wide variety of materials are used to create the glass works of art. After an initial firing process at over 1000 degrees Celsius, the glass pieces cut into mosaics are lowered onto the copper plates hammered into matrices.
The partially translucent, partially shimmering, reflective areas of the three-dimensional sculptures captured in glass offer a magnificent interplay of colors, shapes and shadows that are so characteristic of Manuel Olarte's works.
Apart from certain details made of gold, the resulting works of art are made of pure glass.

Insights into the creative work of Manuel Olarte

The matrices, which are hammered into cold copper, give the glass sculptures their three-dimensional shape. The copper matrices can only be used once during the firing process. The end results are therefore each unique.
Glass is an amorphous solid that changes to the solid state on cooling without crystallizing.
During cooling, the atoms or molecules are not arranged in a crystal lattice, but the disordered structure of the liquid phase is retained.

Carnaval de Barranquilla
Movement, colors and rhythm

Another source of inspiration in Colombian folklore, which is reflected in Olarte's work, is the Carnaval de Barranquilla.
At the second largest carnival on the South American continent after Rio de Janairo, European, African and Indigenous cultures merge into a dazzling festival of joy.
In addition to wild animals such as jaguars, aligators and proboscis monkeys, other Caribbean carnival subjects also populate the colorful, magical jungle of this major event.
